“It depends on who it is, John?”
“I just want to see if you would support a candidate based on his ideas rather than on his party identification or political ideology. “
“I do that anyway, but, sure, I’m game. Let’s play. What does he believe?”
“Well, for starters, he believes the individual states should be able to prohibit abortion except in the case of the life of the mother.”
“Goodness! That’s a deal breaker right off the bat.”
“Wait, he also believes in jettisoning the mental distress justification for seeking an abortion.”
“In other words, he believes in overturning Roe v Bolton (1973). That’s unacceptable. He doesn’t support a woman’s right to choose. I can’t support that. Personal sovereignty is very important me. Who is this guy?”
“Hold on, Bob, don’t quit now. Indulge me for a moment longer.”
“Okay. What are some of his other ideas?”
“He holds the NRA’s interpretation of the Second Amendment.”
“You mean that there’s an individual right to keep and bear arms?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, the Roberts’ Court agrees with him on that. It was a bad decision, but I’m not getting too exercised about that. What else does this guy believe? ”
“He believes in the death penalty even for crimes that do not involve murder.”
“The death penalty is wrong, period. But I’m curious about this idea of applying it to crimes that don’t involve murder. Is he talking about spying, espionage - ”
“Child rape.”
“You’re kidding me. That’s reckless. If a child rapist has death to fear for his crime he is more likely to kill the witness – victim. He is proposing that we put children at risk for murder, John. The guy doesn’t sound very bright to me.”
“Maybe not. He believes that the state should promote religious principles and values. ”
“Now you’re scaring me. In what way?”
“He wants to use taxpayer dollars to fund faith-based organizations. He says he wants to put religious-based organizations central to his work in the White House. ”
“He sounds like a fanatic.”
“He may be. He also supports government surveillance of US citizens and voted to grant immunity to telecom corporations that provided the government with private consumer information.”
“That’s entirely unacceptable! This man doesn’t respect the Constitution. How could he be president?”
“Wait, Bob; there’s more. He says that black people are responsible for their problems. He chastises black parents for feeding their children Popeye’s Chicken and blames inner-city economic conditions on blacks throwing trash out of their car windows. ”
“Oh brother. A blame-the-victim type.”
“Then you’re going to love this. He says that the older generation of civil rights leaders are bitter frustrated men who have a pessimistic view of America.”
“Like who?”
“Well, Martin Luther King, Jr., for one. The candidate says his vision of America is much more optimistic than King’s. ”
“Is this guy white?”
“No, he’s black.”
“It’s Alan Keyes, right?”
“No, no, he claims to be a liberal.”
“Doesn’t sound like one – at least not a progressive one.”
“Hardly. He also wants to expand the war in Central Asia. He says that we ought to invade Pakistan if the Pakistani’s can’t control their borders.”
“Does this man hold any positions that speak for him rather than against him?”
“Well, he says he wants to make health care accessible and affordable.”
“Who is this guy, John, so I can be sure not to vote for him?”
“Barack Obama.”
